How does the orthodontist fix me my braces?

July 9th, 2009

In one week they are going to put me brackets above and below and i wanted to know everything what they are going to do to me since I feel in the armchair of the orthodontist.
Thank for your answers .

You meant the process of applying braces? Well they usually put a device in your mouth that widens and holds on your lips and cheeks back. They take a cotton swab and make your brace tooth dry, they mix this edible, cement like substance. They rub someone your teeth and put the bracket on. They then use ultraviolet ray gun to superheat the cement and make it stay. Its a sour taste. It doesn’t hurt when its being done. Then they add the wire and put an elastic over the wire which ties to the bracket, the wires hook into these metal encasing around your molars.

Your moulds are a different story….

What can you do for tooth decay other than a filling?

July 9th, 2009

I heard that you can oxydise the area (although with limited success)?! What can be done instead of ruining the intergrity of the tooth?

I went to a new dentist and was quite annoyed to find I had a bit of decay on one tooth, as my last dentist had been keeping an eye on it for over a year and suggested things to do prevention wise but didn’t do anything and now the new dentist says I need a filling.

I can;t compain to the old dentist as I have moved to the other side of the world

The structure of teeth are composed of proteins and mineral deposites (calcium apatite). When teeth form the proteins form a scaffold and the calcium crystals start to fill in around the protein scaffold. Bacteria in your mouth (like strep mutans) produce acids which can cause the minerals on your teeth (enamel and dentin) to dissolve. In early cavities, just some of the calcium minerals are dissolved and the protein scaffold remains intact. At this point, there are some things to do to possibly remineralize the tooth (like topical fluoride). However, if the tooth continues to demineralize to the point that the protein scaffold is completely exposed, the protein scaffold collapses and it becomes impossible for the tooth to remineralize. Essentially you have a mush of tooth proteins that becomes a little nest for more and more bacteria to live in. The only way to stop this is to remove it by surgery (cut it out), which is why you go to a Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS).

How does an orthodontist get a adult tooth out of your gums?

July 2nd, 2009

Okay, so i’m 23 and getting braces in two weeks. My orthodontist had four molars (they were bad and capped and filled) removed along with a baby tooth. However, i had to have an oral surgeon remove them and he knew it was for braces. However, i’ve read other places that the surgeon puts a bracket on the adult tooth that is still hiding while your under, but he didn’t do that for me? What is the next option? I dont want to have to go under again, that was not pleasurable!!

?? Help, hardly any time left!

he will numb the tissue, make a little incision, cement a bracket onto the tooth, attach a wire or spring and maybe put a little stitch in the tissue. No big deal.

If you have tooth decay Is your only option to have teeth removed?

June 18th, 2009

My two year old has tooth decay on her two front teeth from the sippy cup, I will be devasted if her teeth have to be removed, Are there any other options? I know someone that had the same thing and they removed his teeth. I don't want my daughter to be toothless

Tooth decay (cause of bad breath) and tooth loss can be due to advanced periodontal disease, an infection in the mouth that can create certain health issues in and of itself. But tooth loss is not the greatest concern of having this mouth infection. The truth is that the teeth may not be the last victims of gum disease because it also has the potential to spread to the jaw bone. Just as the toxins caused the gums and teeth to dissolve, they will also cause the disintegration of the jaw bone itself. Further than this, the toxins could spread from the mouth to the heart and soon very possible brings the infection to other parts of the body. There is much to learn about periodontal disease linked to the heart and other complex organs of the body. While there is much time to consider maximum oral health care (brushing and flossing), proper diet, quitting smoking and alcohol, regular dental checkup and the use of a natural mouthwash – you really have to before periodontal disease threatens you.

What will the orthodontist do at my first appointment?

June 18th, 2009

I already got the x-ray done at the dentists, who sent it to the orthodontist. The dentist already told me that I need some milk teeth out to make space for my other teeth. Will the orthodontist take these teeth out at the first appointment?

If you are ready for braces, then orthodontic records will be taken.
A new set of x-rays different from your regular dental x-rays will be taken, plus photos and impressions of your teeth.
It’s all really easy, and takes about 30 minutes.
If he/she wants the remaining baby teeth extracted, you will be referred back to your regular dentist. (you do not need an oral surgeon for baby teeth)
The next step will be a consultation, where your treatment will be fully covered so you know exactly what will happen from there.
If you have questions, write them down so you won’t forget to ask.
Good luck, and congratulations on your future smile :}

Is there any way to get rid of tooth decay?

June 12th, 2009

I have some tooth decay on the inside arch of my lower teeth, and I'm wondering: is there any proven way to get rid of tooth decay? And if there is, what is it, where do you get it, and how does it work?

A dentist has to remove it….believe that's your only option.

How much does an average orthodontist make each year?

June 12th, 2009

I'm in highschool and im seriously considering orthodontistry but of course i would have to go to a 4-year university and then try to get into dentistry school. My orthodontist has 4 practices of his own all in one state. What would be the average of what he makes?
No exact amount needed just a estimation.

Salary.com offers credible salary averages – - you have to put in your zipcode and be sure to choose the Free Report.
I used to work for a healthcare organization and this is one of the sources they used to come up with competitive salaries compared to other healthcare organizations in the area. The company I worked for was about 10,000 people in size.
It looks like in my area, $125k is average. If you have your own practice and build a large clientele, you will of course have a chance of making more.
People often forget that doctors have a lot of overhead to pay for. They dont get to keep every dollar they take in. They have to pay for their support staff, office supplies, medical supplies, insurance ($$!!), electricity, and on and on. That's called "overhead".
That said, these people end up keeping a nice amount of money. They typically have nice houses and cars. If you want to make good money and help people – this is a very good career choice for you. You like kids, right?? (o:

How long did your orthodontist tell you that you had to wear your retainer?

June 5th, 2009

Looking for answers from people who *recently* had their braces off. I'm an older adult who had a falling out with their orthodontist. Plus, because I got braces so late in life none of my friends remember anything about them or retainers!

My braces have been off for over 6 months and I've worn my retainer every day for at least 8 hours. What were you told when you were given your retainer? How long were you told you had to wear it? Thanks.

I used to work for my orthodontist….he told patients to wear retainers all day every day for at least 3 months, and then you can go to night time only wear every night (if your retainers feel tight when you put them in at night, go back to all day wear for a little bit longer), after a year wear them a few nights a week. again if they feel tight when you put them in wear them more often….but continue to wear them for at least 1-2 nights a week for the rest of your life or your teeth will move back
