What can you do for tooth decay other than a filling?

Thursday, July 9th, 2009

I heard that you can oxydise the area (although with limited success)?! What can be done instead of ruining the intergrity of the tooth?

I went to a new dentist and was quite annoyed to find I had a bit of decay on one tooth, as my last dentist had been keeping an eye on it for over a year and suggested things to do prevention wise but didn’t do anything and now the new dentist says I need a filling.

I can;t compain to the old dentist as I have moved to the other side of the world

The structure of teeth are composed of proteins and mineral deposites (calcium apatite). When teeth form the proteins form a scaffold and the calcium crystals start to fill in around the protein scaffold. Bacteria in your mouth (like strep mutans) produce acids which can cause the minerals on your teeth (enamel and dentin) to dissolve. In early cavities, just some of the calcium minerals are dissolved and the protein scaffold remains intact. At this point, there are some things to do to possibly remineralize the tooth (like topical fluoride). However, if the tooth continues to demineralize to the point that the protein scaffold is completely exposed, the protein scaffold collapses and it becomes impossible for the tooth to remineralize. Essentially you have a mush of tooth proteins that becomes a little nest for more and more bacteria to live in. The only way to stop this is to remove it by surgery (cut it out), which is why you go to a Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS).

Tooth decay (cause of bad breath) and tooth loss can be due to advanced periodontal disease, an infection in the mouth that can create certain health issues in and of itself. But tooth loss is not the greatest concern of having this mouth infection. The truth is that the teeth may not be the last victims of gum disease because it also has the potential to spread to the jaw bone. Just as the toxins caused the gums and teeth to dissolve, they will also cause the disintegration of the jaw bone itself. Further than this, the toxins could spread from the mouth to the heart and soon very possible brings the infection to other parts of the body. There is much to learn about periodontal disease linked to the heart and other complex organs of the body. While there is much time to consider maximum oral health care (brushing and flossing), proper diet, quitting smoking and alcohol, regular dental checkup and the use of a natural mouthwash – you really have to before periodontal disease threatens you.

I have some tooth decay on the inside arch of my lower teeth, and I'm wondering: is there any proven way to get rid of tooth decay? And if there is, what is it, where do you get it, and how does it work?

Question :
Which sugar based drinks are the most aggressive in causing tooth decay over time ?

Hypotheses:
I think that out of the four drinks im testing which consist of apple juice, Coke a Cola, Kool Aid , and Gatorade. Coke will have the quickest effect because of the amount of sugar and caffeine .

Problem:
Which tooth will have the most decay after one month ?
what can support my hypothsis

Coke has an acid in it that destroys the enamel of teeth.

I haven't a clue as to which tooth would have the most decay in a month.

Are you going to use actual teeth or a similiar material to support your claims?

How long after you stop brushing your teeth does tooth decay kick in?

Microscopically, there is decalcification within 48 – 72 hours.

If the filthy acidic condition persists, then gradually it will start to become visible to your naked eyes as chalky white areas.

Over time, that starts to turn into brown decayed lesion.

Will my 6old month son have tooth decay if he keep nursing during the night?

Monday, May 18th, 2009

He is taking breastmilk & formula during day time and only breastmilk during the night. He need to be fed three hourly. His tooth has not appeared yet. Will it be decay if he keep nursing during the night?

No – when this is mentioned, it is about babies who go to sleep sucking a bottle of milk, rather than a pacifier. That can affect teeth that are actually there, not teeth that haven't come in yet. Because there is sugar in milk, the baby should not sleep with a bottle of milk (or anything else for that matter) in his mouth. Nursing throughout the night won't hurt your baby or his nonexistent teeth. However, now that your son is six months old, you might want to try to start breaking him of that habit. What is best to do when a tooth decay occurs?

Sunday, May 10th, 2009

I noticed that my cousin (age 15) has some of her teeth decayed, i have researched it up, and found out that she has root cavities.
What the best possible method for her to get rid of tooth decay?

Most dentists would advise fillings if there is true decay . If it is on the roots, sometimes ozone therapy can be done. Ozone is available pretty much everywhere but the US. It sterilizes the root and hardens the tooth stronger than the original tooth. (better than a filling). Some dentists in the US offer ozone, most do not.

How can I identify if my child of 2 years has decayed teeth?I always check for black lines on her teeth, but have not found any yet. What are the other signs of tooth decay?I brush her teeth twice a day.

ive seen many holes in my 3 kids teeth,, so with my 4th she was having a cry on her weigh check appointment and my health nurse picked up a small hole ARGGGGGGH [though she will recheck it next week to make sure it wasnt food stuck in her tooth]
if u take him in the daylight, get him to hold his mouth open, quickly look at each tooth to see if they look perfect
any holes or dark patches are not good,, u can see holes pretty easy in good lighting,, good luck xxxxxxxxx
